BAN-PT Working Visit to JIHEE and KBRI Tokyo: Enhancing the Quality of Higher Education Accreditation

The Director of the Executive Board of the National Accreditation Agency for Higher Education (BAN-PT), Prof. Ari Purbayanto, Ph.D., and Prof. Agus Setyo Muntohar, Ph.D., Executive Board Member in charge of Data and Information Systems, conducted a working visit to Tokyo, Japan, on November 27-28, 2023. The main purpose of this visit was to engage in benchmarking with the Japan Institution for Higher Education Evaluation (JIHEE) and hold discussions with the Education and Cultural Attaché (Atdikbud) Prof. Dr. Ir. Yusli Wardiatno, M.Sc at the Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo.

In the meeting on November 27, 2023, with JIHEE, one of the five accreditation institutions for higher education institutions in Japan, the President of JIHEE, Mr. Ishii Masahiko, appreciated the previous cooperation with BAN-PT, particularly in the field of vocational education in Indonesia. Prof. Ari Purbayanto, Ph.D., responded by saying, "We highly appreciate this collaboration and take valuable lessons from JIHEE that can be applied to the external quality assurance system for higher education in Indonesia.

The subsequent meeting with Atdikbud Prof. Dr. Ir. Yusli Wardiatno, M.Sc at the Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo on November 28, 2023, was crucial in conveying the results of the discussion with JIHEE. Atdikbud Prof. Dr. Ir. Yusli Wardiatno, M.Sc expressed, "Collaboration with institutions like JIHEE is crucial to bring the accreditation system for higher education in Indonesia in line with international standards. We fully support BAN-PT's initiative in this regard.

With adjustments to the accreditation system and instruments in accordance with Minister of Education and Culture Regulation Number 53/2023, BAN-PT hopes to gain new insights for the development of accreditation instruments that are responsive to the needs and challenges of the times. JIHEE has demonstrated innovation in evaluating the performance achievements of higher education institutions, which are reported to the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology (Monbukagakusho) for guidance.

This visit marks a significant step in BAN-PT's efforts to enhance the quality of higher education accreditation in Indonesia through learning from best practices in Japan and close cooperation with the Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo, aiming to advance Indonesian higher education on the international stage.
